FAQ

常見問題

What is a taal?

A taal (ताल) is a rhythmic cycle in Indian classical music. Each taal has a fixed number of matras (beats) divided into vibhags (groups). The first beat is sam, an emphasised landing point; the khali beats are softer "empty" markers.

Why are some beats highlighted differently?

In our visual theka, the bold-coloured beats are sam (the cyclic resolution) and the muted beats are khali ("empty" — clapped silently in traditional notation). The current matra is always shown in solid accent colour.

What BPM should I practise at?

Start at 60–80 BPM (vilambit / slow tempo) for raga elaboration and improvisation. Move to 100–140 BPM (madhya / medium) for standard khayal and bhajan. Above 160 BPM (drut / fast) is for taans and tarana.
